The term biomass has been introduced for pointing out all the organic materials (vegetable or animal) that has not undergone any fossilization process and are used for energy production.
Therefore all fossil fuels (oil, coal, gas, etc...) can not be considered as biomass.
The biomasses reenter among the renewable sources as for the issued carbonic anhydride for the energy production doesn't represent an increase of it in the environment, but it is the same one that the plants have before absorbed for developing and than, to their death, it would return in the atmosphere through the normal degradation processes of organic matter. The use of the biomasses accelerates therefore the return of carbonic anhydride into the atmosphere again, making it available to the plants.
Biomass is defined as:
- According to the physical state:
liquid or solid
- Depending on the level of material processing: processed or raw
processed or raw
The categories of biomass proposals are primarily intended for the chain:
- Ligno-cellulosic biomass
- Biomass from oilseeds for the production of pure plant oil, biodiesel, etc.
- Biomass matrix sugar and starch to produce ethanol and the like
